Fereghan Rug
Dating to around 1880, this Fereghan rug has real 'old school' charm. It is finely knotted in hand-spun wool, and the dyes are all derived from natural sources which has resulted in a subtle range of colours. The 'Herati' design in the field is often seen on room-size Fereghan carpets, but less so on rugs of this size. This rug has an above average knot count which as enabled the weaver to execute the design crisply and with good spacing. Note the delightful little spandrels in the corners of the field decorated with flowers and little animals which breaks up the precision of the Herati pattern, but also reminds us that the weaver has a personality. The lovely terracotta 'turtle' border is typical of Fereghan rugs of this type with repeating palmettes and meandering vines. This is a classic rug with a classic design that would fulfill anyone's expectations of a Persian rug.
